Healing with Hademade Bread by Kathy Summers

Breast cancer survivor Kathy Summers has written a book focusing on bread-making as a form of therapy for women with breast cancer. A mother of nine children and grandmother of 17, Kathy has made bread by hand almost every day for 36 years.

Four years ago she wrote the book Handmade Breads: From Start to Finish in Just Two Hours. She was in the middle of writing a revision when she learned she had cancer. Kathy said she felt "what a gift it would be if women with breast cancer learned the art of making handmade bread."

So in addition to recipes and tips for making all kinds of breads and rolls, her book includes tips and entries from her "breast cancer journal." She believes making bread by hand stimulates physical, mental and spiritual healing while filling the house with an inviting aroma and producing something delicious to eat.

"It's not a substitute for the great exercises they give you, but it's something that works well that you can do ... and you're doing something for your family and others, as well."

Kathy Summers is a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner and a volunteer with Bosom Buddies of Hawaii. Kathy donates 50% of the profits from the sale of her book to Bosom Buddies.

The Race for the Cure
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
Sunday, October 22, 2006

The Komen mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.

In 1983, Nancy Brinker created the first Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure® in Dallas, Texas with 800 participants. Today, the Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world.

In addition to raising funds, the Komen Race for the Cure® Series is committed to educating the public about early detection, the strongest method of surviving this life-threatening disease. The five-year survival rate is 95 percent when the disease is discovered while still confined to the breast.

The Komen Race for the Cure® Series helps raise awareness of the importance of a positive breast health program - monthly breast self-examinations for all women beginning at age 20, clinical breast exams every three years beginning at age 20 and annually at age 40, and annual mammography beginning by age 40.

The Hawai'i Affiliate has been a major contributor to the financial health of our program for the past six years.

This year, the Honolulu Race for the Cure is scheduled for Sunday, October 22, 2006.
